Course Overview

This hands-on course focuses on modeling, simulating, and analyzing grid-forming inverters using PSCAD. Participants will work through a real-world case study, gaining practical experience in designing and testing inverter-based control strategies for modern power systems.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand grid-forming inverters and their role in power system stability.
  • Develop and simulate grid-forming control strategies in PSCAD.
  • Analyze system response under faults, islanding, and black start conditions.
  • Explore weak grid integration and system resilience improvements.

Course Structure

  • Introduction to grid-forming inverters and their applications.
  • PSCAD Model Development for an example case study.
  • Control Implementation: Droop control, virtual inertia, and adaptive response.
  • Performance Analysis: Stability, fault response, and black start capability.

Notes:

  • All participants will receive digital course materials, which may include slide decks, reference guides, toolkits, and access to the session recording.

  • Upon successful completion, you will earn the ElectroMentors Certificate of Completion.

  • ElectroMentors is an approved provider of IEEE CEU/PDH certificates. Should you wish to receive it, it is available as an optional add-on during checkout.

  • This course may be eligible for Professional Development Hours (PDHs) with engineering regulatory bodies such as EGBC, APEGA, PEO, Engineers Nova Scotia, and other similar organizations across Canada. Participants are responsible for ensuring the course content is relevant to their area of professional practice and for retaining proof of completion for audit purposes.
