This is a comprehensive introductory course designed for engineers, researchers, and students who want to build a strong foundation in HVDC transmission systems. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical PSCAD modeling exercises, participants will develop the essential knowledge and skills needed to understand, simulate, and analyze HVDC systems.
What you will learn:
1) Fundamental Operating Principles of HVDC Systems
2) Line-Commutated Converter (LCC-HVDC): Basic working principle, rectification and inversion modes, commutation process and advantages and limitations
3) Voltage Source Converter (VSC-HVDC): Basic operating principle, PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) techniques, and advantages over LCC
4) System Components of HVDC Transmission: Transformers, valves, smoothing reactors, filters
5) Control Systems for LCC-HVDC: Current control mode, extinction angle control, DC voltage control
6) VSC-HVDC Controls: Decoupled control, PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) function
7) Modeling in PSCAD, Case Studies / Examples
