Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Training

This Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Training was developed through a collaboration between the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG), the U.S. Department of Energy’s Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X) Program, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to support industry stakeholders across the United States.

As the power grid becomes increasingly dominated by inverter-based resources, large electronic loads, battery energy storage systems, and advanced power electronics, EMT simulation has become a critical component of interconnection, reliability, and planning studies. This training is designed to strengthen the technical capabilities of the current workforce by providing structured, practical instruction on performing EMT simulations within today’s evolving interconnection and planning framework.

Participants will gain hands-on insight into real-world EMT study workflows, including model development, validation, benchmarking, testing, and study execution. The course emphasizes practical methodologies and industry best practices that can be directly applied to improve study quality, consistency, and defensibility across utilities, ISOs/RTOs, consulting firms, and developer organizations.

The training modules are tailored to reflect the day-to-day responsibilities of engineers conducting EMT analysis, as well as the broader organizational considerations involved in managing EMT study programs. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a clearer understanding of how to integrate EMT studies effectively into modern interconnection processes and system planning activities.

This program equips professionals with both the technical depth and practical guidance necessary to elevate EMT study practices across the industry.
