Free Workshop – Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Training
This training, facilitated by the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X) Program and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is available through ElectroMentors. The workshop focuses on strengthening industry capability in performing Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulations within today’s interconnection and planning framework.
As inverter-based resources, battery energy storage systems, large electronic loads, and advanced power electronic technologies continue to reshape the grid, EMT studies have become essential for accurate system representation and reliability assurance. This training emphasizes practical, real-world methodologies for EMT model development, validation, benchmarking, and study execution. It addresses both the technical execution of EMT simulations and the organizational practices required to manage EMT study programs effectively.
The workshop covers foundational EMT concepts, model creation and testing procedures, inverter-based resource controls, special studies such as subsynchronous oscillation (SSO/SSCI), and emerging considerations such as large data center load integration—equipping participants with actionable tools to enhance study quality and consistency across the industry.
