Power System Optimization using Sequential Decision Analytics

Starts December 7, 2025

$250

Online

This course offers a practical introduction to optimization techniques tailored specifically for power grid operations and planning. It introduces key optimization principles and categorizes methods relevant to solving real-world challenges in power generation, transmission, distribution, and load management. Emphasis is placed on how these methods can improve grid reliability, operational efficiency, and flexibility in the face of increasing complexity and renewable integration.

Participants will explore a range of optimization techniques—linear, nonlinear, stochastic, and dynamic—with direct application to grid balancing, unit commitment, demand response, and investment planning. A major focus will be placed on Sequential Decision Analytics (SDA), an advanced framework pioneered by Dr. Warren Powell at Princeton University, designed to support adaptive, multi-stage decision-making in dynamic grid environments with uncertainty.

By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the tools and strategies to apply optimization models for enhancing grid performance, integrating distributed resources, and supporting robust grid modernization initiatives, considering grid uncertainties.

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Understand foundational optimization principles and their classifications in the context of power grid operations.
  • Evaluate traditional and modern optimization methods for solving grid-related challenges across different time horizons.
  • Learn the fundamentals of Sequential Decision Analytics (SDA) and how it applies to real-time control and long-term grid planning.
  • Apply optimization techniques to improve grid reliability, economic dispatch, DER coordination, and strategic investment decisions.

Additional Notes:

  • All participants will receive digital course materials, which may include slide decks, reference guides, toolkits, and access to the session recording.

  • Upon successful completion, you will earn the ElectroMentors Certificate of Completion.
