Building Smart Power and Energy Systems
Starts October 12

Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are reshaping the power and energy sector by orchestrating a wide range of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs)—including rooftop solar, wind turbines, battery storage, and electric vehicles—into an intelligent, integrated network. By aggregating and optimizing these decentralized assets, VPPs enable real-time coordination of supply and demand, improve grid stability, and reduce dependence on large, centralized power plants. As a key enabler of energy transition, VPPs offer a scalable, cost-effective approach to integrating variable renewables, bolstering grid resilience, and advancing decarbonization efforts.
This course offers an in-depth introduction to Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) and their growing significance in power system operation and planning. Participants will gain insights into the core technologies, communication architectures, and control strategies that drive VPP functionality. The course will also examine how VPPs support grid modernization, enhance DER integration, and align with evolving regulatory frameworks. Through real-world examples and interactive sessions, attendees will be equipped to understand and apply VPP concepts within the context of modern energy systems.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define the architecture, components, and control strategies of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs)
- Understand how VPPs manage and integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the grid
- Evaluate the technical, economic, and policy dimensions of VPP deployment
- Analyze real-world VPP projects to identify operational challenges and success factors
- Formulate strategies for planning, designing & operating VPPs in power system environments
