Transmission Line Transients in the Modern Grid: A Practical Simulation Approach Using PSCAD
Starts October 19, 2025
$450
Online
Course Overview:
As large loads like data centers, EV chargers, and renewable generation rapidly reshape the grid, the importance of accurately modeling transmission line behavior has never been greater. This hands-on course equips engineers with the essential tools to simulate and analyze transient events in high-voltage power transmission lines using PSCAD.
We’ll begin with foundational transmission line theory and quickly dive into how fast electromagnetic transients—triggered by switching events, faults, and lightning strikes—propagate along the line. Special focus will be given to the role of traveling waves and their increasing relevance in protection, fault location, and system coordination.
Participants will gain hands-on experience in building distributed parameter line models, simulating a variety of transient scenarios, and interpreting waveform data with real-world insight. This course is not just about simulation—it’s about staying ahead in a power grid that’s changing fast.
Why This Course Matters:
- The shift toward ultra-fast protection schemes demands deeper insight into traveling wave phenomena
- Accurate line modeling is critical for system stability studies in weak and evolving grids
- The future of grid studies depends on high-fidelity EMT simulations—starting with lines
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the relevance of transmission line theory in power systems transient analysis
- Determine and apply distributed parameter models for transient studies
- Use PSCAD to construct and simulate transmission line models
- Analyze voltage/current waveforms and understand their implications in switching, fault, and surge events
- Build the groundwork for advanced topics like traveling wave-based protection and insulation coordination
